Week 31: Welcome to the 5th Grade!!!

The first half of this week we finished up 4th grade, and the second half we started on 5th grade kanji! Congratulations!! Can you tell where the cutoff is? The 4th grade finished with some very complicated kanji with high stroke counts, and the 5th grade started with some much more simple kanji…what a relief!

We also had a LOT more kanji with the man, human 人 (亻) radical. This seems to be one of the most common radicals we see.

Week 30: Joyo Kanji Challenge

This week marks the last FULL week of 4th grade. That means next week we start learning 5th grade kanji! Can you believe it? The kanji this week were hard, with most stroke counts in the double digits. We also saw many different radicals including ⻌ (辵,辶), 貝, and 言 (訁). Do you remember them all?

国: Names of Countries in Japanese with Audio!

Do you know how to say names of countries in japanese? Luckily, most country names are pretty easy to say in Japanese. They are just an approximate translation that is written out in katakana such as カナダ – Kanada or ルーマニア – Rūmania. Of course, some are a little different such as モンゴル – Mongoru (Mongolia) and some such as えいこく – Eikoku (Great Britain) don’t sound anything alike!

Holidays Are Over…Time for the Week 33 Recap!

Week 29: Joyo Kanji Challenge

Thanksgiving is over and it’s back to work…

We know your bellies are probably still bursting with turkey from last week, but the kanji never stops! We had a bunch of new radicals this week and the highest stroke count yet: 18 strokes! Doesn’t seem like kanji will get any easier when we graduate to the 5th grade in just two weeks!!

This week we also learned 訓: the kanji for…Japanese kanji reading! Of course the kanji for kanji readings has many different readings.
